hello all
I have some time and I wanted to give a bit more details about my first day(days) in China!
Okay so I arrived on the airport at 5:30 am on Sunday June 1, 2008. After checking in my bags I proceed to the boarding gate and waited for my flight that departs at 7:20 am. Even though I was early, It was nice because I got a chance to do a mental check of all the things I had to do, and it gave me a opportunity to people watch.
About 30 mins in I see about 30 Asian men all dressed in the same brown and red jumper suit and jacket. The all had BCCGEZ on their jackets. YUP they were a China Olympic team and they took up a lot of space on the plane. Lucky they didn’t sit next to me. Unluckly two drunken club girls were sitting next to me. They stunk of booze and were soo loud and unruly. All they kept talking about some club they just let and how they are lucky they made the flight.
” oh my god we just left he house 30 mins ago”
“I know !Can you believe we made it…. I am soo drunk.”
I just closed my eyes and tried to tune them out. 1.5 hours later we landed in Newark, new jersey and I Proceeded to the final gate.
This gate had a bi-lingual gate agent who spoke in English and Mandarin Chinese, and made every announcement twice. It was a little annoying but it was good in prepping me for China.
A few hours later I boarded the flight and prepared for a 13 hour trip. I had good seat, I sat next to window on the bulkhead row. So no one was siting in front of me or could recline on my lap. Also no one sat in the middle row, but a old Asian man was sitting on the aisle seat. He was pretty kool though. I helped him with his tray and seat belt and he clasps his hands together did a little bow and said” thank you thank you”.
The flight path was weird. Instead of traveling across the ocean to the west, we went east towards the north pole. About 6 hours in, I looked at the window and saw nothing but ice. I looked at the interactive map that displayed our journey and i was directly over the north pole!!
It was definitely an interesting flight. They fed us about every 2 hours. The first meal was a steak dinner. Then some cookies. I then fell asleep for a few hours but when I woke up we had a meat sub sandwich.
I brought my psp and and mp3 player thinking I was going to be bored, but I found out that I didn’t need it. Every seat had a personal tv with access to 223 cd albums 324 Movies and 50 or so TV shows!!. It also had some games like poker and bowling but it didn’t play any. I watched the movie sideways, and then deuce Bigelow, took a nap and still had 8 hours to go. It was a marathon of a trip but all in all it was much better than I thought.
At about 12:20 pm Beijing time we arrive in China. It was now Monday afternoon. Technically I had been in an airplane for 24 hours but physically only about 15. I did lose a day though.
Looking outside the airplane my first impressions were. ” Man China is foggy”, I would later realize that this was not fog or haze but it was smog……. yea pretty gross.
I exited the plane and followed the crowd to the customs. I didn’t have any problems at all. I was so expecting them to tackle me to the ground and give me a full body search, but they just nodded me through.
As I walked through customs and into the airport the first thing I saw was a massive KFC billboard and restaurant in the airport. I thought about calling Jesse Jackson, but I just chalked it up to silly stereotypes and laughed as I walked by.
Eventually I was picked up at the airport by an IDD representative. Her name was Elise, she was nice, she hailed a cab, our conversation was very short and fragmented, just like this run on sentence.
I arrived at IDD and had a few brief Introductions. first impressions were that it was very busy and IDD swag all of the place. I was very impressed.
Elise then calls me a cab and takes me to my Apartment…..
WOW wowowo wow wo ow owowowow ow owow o
